The Italo Godfather

This month’s guest is one of the pioneers of Italo disco and electro – the one and only Alexander Robotnick a.k.a. Maurizio Dami.

He made his debut on the Italian music scene as the founding member of Avida, a dance-cabaret band featuring Daniele Trambusti and Stefano Fuochi, but he first rose to international prominence thanks to his pioneering electro track ‘Problèmes D'Amour’ from 1983.

His debut album Ce N'est Q'un Début set a new benchmark for electronic production, combining Italo, boogie and proto- New Beat into a form that also appealed to the pop market.

A year later he focused on making soundtracks for theatre works, video-installations and Italian feature films.

In 1987 he turned his interest to World Music, and for the next decade collaborated with African, Kurdish and Indian musicians.

In summer 1995 he conceived and organized the first Ambient Music Festival in Florence at Anfiteatro delle Cascine and in 2000 he created his own label, Hot Elephant Music.

Since the millennium he has embarked electro and has carved out a reputation as one of the genre’s best DJs. On August 4th he makes his first-ever appearance at the main Dekmantel Festival.

So I thought what better to get warmed for the festive than to get the man himself to put together a Synth Hero mix.

He decided not to go for a theme, instead choosing to take us on a whirlwind tour of 24 tracks that have defined his journey so far, from The Residents and Visage, to Legowelt and Suicide.

So sit back and let Mr Robotnik rewire your mind, body and soul…
